Mercedes-Benz has developed the MB 229.52 specification for breakthrough oils that can face the most severe thermal constraints, and are compatible with most modern aftertreatment systems.
What does the MB 229.52 specification entail?
The MB 229.52 specification applies to all Mercedes vehicles equipped with “BlueTEC” diesel engines. These are fitted with SCR (Selective Catalyst Reduction) allowing NOx treatment through the use of the AdBlue. More specifically, it concerns the newest 6-cylinder diesel engine OM642 (BLUETEC) with Euro 6 exhaust gas norm.
This new specification also requires improved cold flow properties to reduce friction. This extra requirement for cold flow properties allows excellent oil flow at start up, faster oil pressure build up, the faster raising of revs and the faster reaching of the operating temperature. This type of lubricant allows fuel consumption reduction and therefore reduces greenhouse gas (CO2) emissions.
